General Description
Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) is seeking an individual with a deep commitment to improving student achievement by providing supporting to struggling students in the area of reading. The elementary reading specialist will use the "push-in" and on occasion "pull-out" method of remediation to support students needing Tier II and Tier III interventions. The elementary reading specialist will also use all data sources to provide targeted, research-based strategies to improve literacy skills of identified students. The elementary reading specialist will use Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) data and other reading diagnostic tools to determine a student's oral reading, phonological awareness skills, spelling and morphology, recognition of alphabet letters and sounds and concept of words. The elementary reading specialist will work collaboratively with the Title I reading teacher, building level instructional coach, and the K-2 literacy instructional coach to assess students' needs, plan for remediation and professional development.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Requirement

?The applicant shall provide a transcript that specifies graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in education or closely related field of study.
Master's degree is required for this position. Credentials shall include, at the minimum, strong academic preparation in elementary education with a concentration in reading and/or language arts; and/or an endorsement in grades K-6, or other combination of related endorsement(s) preferred.
An endorsement as a reading specialist is a requirement for this position.
Five years of experience as a classroom teacher is a requirement for this position.

Essential Job Functions

Gathers, organizes, and interprets assessment data on identified students;
Uses PALS data and other diagnostic tools to assess students' reading levels and instructional needs;
Uses diagnostic data to focus on emergent, beginning, and transitional readers;
Uses instructional best practices to support students with word recognition and spelling of high frequency words, use of affixes, roots, synonyms and antonyms;
Support student with using appropriate phonetic strategies when reading and spelling;
Uses techniques to support student's with alphabet letter sound and recognition;
Utilizes best practice instructional strategies and research-based intervention curriculum materials to meet the learning needs of identified students;
Demonstrates a knowledge and understanding of the Virginia English Standards of Learning (SOL) and school division's curricular requirements;
Selects appropriate literacy instructional materials to meet student needs;
Skilled at providing instruction in whole and small group settings in a virtual and face-to-face learning environment;
Analyzes existing student achievement data and administers student assessments and monitoring instruments as needed to aid in progress monitoring of students;
Maintains accurate student records and student progress data reports as required by district policy;
Attends professional development opportunities;
Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with school personnel;
Promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and courtesy and models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions with co-workers, customers and clients;
Follows district guidelines and policies.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The elementary reading specialist performs complex professional work that includes planning, coordinating, organizing and analyzing assessment data to provide "push-in" and on occasion "pull-out" research-based interventions in the areas of reading for identified students in a Title I school in both a face-to-face and virtual learning environment.
Assessment data to be used to identify students should include SOL, PALS, benchmark, division and school level diagnostic assessments and all other available school and division data.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the director of teaching and learning.
